Obituary and account of the funeral of Roger Emmett

Roger’s funeral service on the 4th of July was quite an event. Hambleden parish church has a seating capacity of 200 but had another 150 standing within when I arrived at 1.40 for the 2.00 pm service. An additional 200 were gathered outside the church when the funeral cortege entered the graveyard. It was led by the priest flanked by 8 men in ranks of two carrying sheaves of corn with the family behind them. It was not possible to recognise any other Kingscullians that might have been attending but a significant number of local councillors and other dignitaries from the surrounding districts were identified.

One of Roger’s cousins gave the eulogy. He spoke very well and with humour. When Roger left Kings School he went to work on the family farm at Frieth before attending agricultural college. On completion of his course he returned to work with his father at Little Parmoor Farm staying with him until his untimely early death. The latter was a great shock which took him some time to get over. For the next 20 years he worked the land in partnership with his brother David.

As a youngster he played rugby, was very active in the Maidenhead Young Farmers Club and was generally engaged in local affairs. He met Frances, a farmer’s daughter, when she came south following two of her sisters and they raised a family together. He was a sportsman and countryman who loved farming and was also wedded to the land of the South Chilterns.

He ran a rough shoot which he thoroughly enjoyed and finally gave up playing rugby at 56. He was blessed with good health, remaining fit until the day of his heart attack at the age of around 68. He was involved in farming affairs and also took a leading role in the local community. He died in the last year of his 6-year term as Chairman of Wycombe District Council at a time when he was planning the church service that would celebrate his hand-over.

He was a good man much respected by all who will be solely missed within the family but also in the community at large.
